Reducing Data Costs While Improving Availability
Traditional data acquisition strategies assume data sources send information directly to a centralized application over internet connectors. In data-heavy environments, this direct approach often leads to inefficiencies and higher operational costs. By making these connectors ‘smart’, these data streams can be enhanced at points of egress to reduce communications bandwidth and cost while enabling the connectors to improve localized performance.
The i3-Edge acts as an information multiplexer, combining multiple data streams into a single, logical flow. This reduces both operational complexity and maintenance expenses—and can significantly lower mobile data costs when using cellular networks. The system can also provide local data embellishment at the source thereby allowing the data infrastructure to support virtualized data features.
As an example, the i3-edge supports custom user-developed plugins which can embellish data streams as they flow through the infrastructure. For example, these plugins might provide real-time analysis of video imagery flowing through a data pip and then extract of actionable alerts from raw data. With a built-in local access point, users can view and use data on-site—avoiding the delays and costs of sending data back and forth to a central server.
